2023 Alvarinho, Vila Nova, Vinho Verde 12.5%

This is what's called Albarino across the border in Galicia where it has become incredibly fashionable, and with good reason. Prices have risen as a result so we've snuck in this version from Portugal. It's made by Casa Vila Nova whose Loureiro has proved very popular. This is fuller and richer in flavour than the Loureiro with a pretty, floral nose and a hint of minerality. Its fresh, clean style would go well with fish, seafood and light salads. In fact, you needn't bother with food at all if you don't want to as it would be ideal to enjoy in the garden on a warm spring or summer day.

Casa de Vila Nova is owned by the Lencastre family, of aristocratic Portuguese lineage (one of their ancestors became the first Baron of Varzea do Douro in the 1800s). This land has been in their family since the 12th century - the ivy clad tower that still remains from that time is now surrounded by Vila Nova (new house) that was built in the 1700s, and the property was gradually extended over the centuries.
