Urban Park Leggero Appassimento 2021, Montresor, Veneto 14.0%

60% Corvina and 20% each of Corvinone and Rondinella.  The grapes are dried for a few months before being pressed.  The wine then spends 6 months in oak resulting in a wine with ripe berry aromas and great concentration of flavour.  We're approaching Amarone territory here with that wonderful concentrated ripeness of red fruit flavours and gentle sweet spice but with clean, balancing acidity, but this is a gentler version.  The word "Leggero" means light or gentle indicating that the grapes have been only gently dried before fermentation rather than fully dried as with Amarone.  All Amarones are made using the appassimento method, but not all appassimento wines are Amarones.  To be an Amarone they need to come from the legally defined area for Amarone and contain certain grape varieties (though this wine does have those varieties) and the grapes fully dried.  All things considered this is tremendous value when you consider what it is - basically halfway to an Amarone style for under £20.
