Uggiano Faggiano Riserva 2022, Chianti, Tuscany 13.5%

90% Sangiovese and 10% Colorino the grapes come from Uggiano's vineyards in Colli Fiorentini and Chianti Classico where many of the vines are quite old.  After a fermentation of 10-15 days the wine spends around 12 months in French oak barriques.  It is then moved to much larger oak casks for a further 6-8 months followed by 12 months in bottle before release.  This is classic Chianti with that characteristic Sangiovese dark cherry and plum fruit with some spicy, almost meaty, undertones and fresh cherry acidity.  The structure of this Chianti puts it well with tomato-based sauces, ragu and grilled or roasted meats.

Azienda Uggiano is an interesting producer, especially if you like traditional Tuscan wines but don't necessarily wish to pay the prices associated with the famous names in Chianti Classico.  Uggiano dates back to the 1970s, originating at the Castle of Montespertoli.  In 1976 the winery moved to its present location at San Vincenzo a Torri, near the Pesa river and about 25km from Florence.  heir vineyards sit at 250-300m above sea level on the hills between Montespertoli, Montelupo Fiorentino and Casciano Val di Pesa so although they are in Colli Fiorentini they are right on the edge of the Chianti Classico area.
