I love Sangiovese with it's cherry-and-savoury flavours. Here are three wines to showcase the variety. One bottle each of the following:
Uggiano Governo Toscano 2023, IGT Tuscany, Italy 13.5% - 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo but 10-15% of the grapes are left on the vine to get super-ripe (that's why it's called "Governo" rather than Chianti Chianti). This is fuller and rounder than Chianti and much the better for it.
Sangiovese/Syrah 2023, Uggiano, IGT Tuscany, Italy 13.0% - Tuscany again and another curiosity that is't labelled as Chianti, although it could be... 85% Sangiovese and 15% Syrah. This has more of bramble fruit character than the Governo with the Syrah adding a bit of weight.
Sassaiolo Rosso Piceno 2021, Monte Schiavo, Marche, Italy 13.5% - Over to the eastern coast of Italy for a 50/50 Sangiovese/Montepulciano blend. This is more black cherry and plums with gentle use of oak. Lovely.
