85% Sangiovese and 15% Syrah this is open, juicy and savoury. The Sangiovese is grown in the north of Tuscany bringing classic cherry and spice while the smaller Syrah component (which comes from vines in Chianti Classico) is aged in oak for 9 months adding a bit of weight and some lovely bramble character to the blend. This is a terrific combination offering a super balance of ripe red fruit and gentle oak.
Whilst this could be labelled as Chianti, Uggiano have chosen to label it as Sangiovese/Syrah and as Toscana IGT for three reasons. Firstly, it's a very well-known IGT because of the Super Tuscans from the area so it's not seen as a lesser wine than those labelled as Chianti (quite the opposite actually). Secondly, it allows a degree of flexibility in the blend should they wish to adjust it from vintage to vintage, and thirdly it's quite different to a traditional Chianti being rounder and fuller, and being able to state the blend on the label is a good way to illustrate this.
An excellent value modern Italian red that matches well with a wide range of foods.
