If any variety makes wines that actually smell of grapes it's Muscat, though the word "Muscat" covers a number of sub-varieties such as Muscat a Petit Grains, Muscat of Alexandria and Muscat Ottonel. Here we have a couple of pure Muscats and one Muscat-dominated blend with Italy and Spain represented.
One bottle each of the following three wines:
Dry Muscat 2024, Bodegas Juan Gil, Jumilla, Spain 13.0% - Muscat a Petit Grains fermented to full dryness. Grapey, subtle and wonderfully fresh.
Vina Esmeralda 2024, Miguel Torres, Catalunya, Spain 11.5% - 85% Muscat of Alexandria and 15% Gewurztraminer. Torres has made this brilliant blend for decades and it's always good. Grapey but with a hint of lychee and rose petal from the Gewurztraminer. A beautiful wine.
Moscato Frizzate 2024, Cantine Volpi, Piemonte, Italy 5.5% - The vine equivalent of a sorbet. Serve between courses to refresh the palate. Alternatively, serve as a dessert wine with fruit-based light puddings. This is (I believe) Muscat a Petit Grains again, though under it's Italian name. It's low in alcohol and semi-sparkling with a fresh florality and gentle sweetness balanced by crisp acidity. Wonderfully original
