Monastrell (as Mourvedre is known in Spain) sometimes pops up as a single varietal wine, but is often used as a supporting act with other varieties to add concentration and depth to a blend, or itself blended with another variety to temper its power a little. Here we have a single varietal from Spain and a couple of blends. One where Monastrell is the dominant partner, and one where it's the supporting act. One bottle each of the following:
Tarima Organico 2023, Bodegas Volver, Alicante, Spain 14.0% - 100% Monastrell grown organically showing dark red fruit character, depth and concentration. A personal favourite!
El Tesoro Monastrell/Shiraz 2023, DO Jumilla, Spain 13.5% - Mostly Monastrell with 15% Shiraz added to add aroma, heighten the fruit and add a smoother note to the palate. A relatively new wine to us which is gaining a lot of fans.
Les Oliviers Merlot/Mourvedre 2024, IGP Pays d'Oc, France 13.0% - An incredibly popular wine with the approachability of Merlot, with plum and damson fruit, enlivened with 20% Mourvedre for added depth and flavour.
