Malbec Organico 2024, Bodega Urqo, Valle de Uco, Mendoza 14.0%

Ever since the Argentinians adopted Malbec as very much "their" grape variety there seems to have been quiet competition going on to see who can make the most powerful and full-bodied expression.  This Malbec represents a return to the variety's French origins where the style was quite different.  This comes from a quiet corner of Tupangato which is in the northern part of the Uco Valley in Mendoza and the grapes are grown organically.  The vineyards here sit at the foot of the Andes and are famous for their high altitude and stunning scenery.  It's a bit of a cold trap, consistently recording lower temperatures than neighbouring areas, and the grapes here produce wines of elegance and perfume rather than power.    Some have compared these Malbecs to the way young Pinot Noir smells showing soft red fruit aromas rather than the angular jammy nose of the bigger styles.  There's no oak here (and a deliberate effort to minimise sulphites) simply so that the fruit can be shown at its absolute best.  This is a pretty Malbec with open fruit, true elegance and balance.
