Its name means "The Underdog Cru" and Lirac is a Rhone Cru with a difference. In general, the wines are softer than its peers. Here, it’s all about the finesse of the Grenache. The terroir in this part of the Rhone is classic well drained limestone covered with a layer of red clay and pebble. The climate is classic Mediterranean with the mistral wind playing a key role.
This a blend of 50% Grenache Noir, 45% Syrah and 5% Mourvedre. It is rich and ripe with dark fruit flavours and a gentle hint of spice. The grapes are macerated for 21 days to enhance the fruit and to keep the tannins soft and approachable meaning that even though this is a young wine it can be enjoyed now. There's no oak and the whole point of this is an approachable example of southern Rhone red for immediate enjoyment with the bramble fruit of Grenache playing the leading role. It's made by the same winemaker that made the Lirac Font de Notre Dame which we stocked previously.
