The second wine of Clos Fourtet (which is also known as Closserie de Fourtet). It's a 22 hectare clay-limestone Saint-Emilion Premier Grand Cru Classe based on growing top quality Merlot backed up by smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This particular wine has received very strong scores from wine writers (such as 97-98 points from James Suckling, 94-96 from the Wine Advocate) and represents excellent value for a top quality Saint-Emilion.
A wet spring in 2023 was initially of concern, but the warm and dry August and early September worked wonders allowing the harvest to reach excellent ripeness whilst retaining freshness. The Clos Fourtet style is one of precision, freshness and elegance rather than power. The blend of La Muraille is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and you can expect black cherry, blackberry and cassis fruit with a hint of florality on the nose. There are silky tannins and refined structure with some gentle oak spice. This is more a wine to tuck away for a while longer than something to rush into, though 2-3 hours in a decanter would mean that it could be enjoyed now should you wish.
