The second wine of Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal, a 5th Growth property located towards the south of Pauillac and bordered by Latour, Pichon Baron and Grand Puy Lacoste. The production at Haut-Bages Liberal has been 100% organic since 2012 (certified from 2019) and their attention to detail is meticulous. The blend is 78% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Merlot and the wine is aged 50% in oak barrels (10% new oak) and 50% in egg-shaped tanks. The intention with La Chapelle is to create a more accessible wine than the grand vin, which reaches drinkability sooner, but still expressing the style of the chateau with crunchy blackcurrant fruit with a background of blackberry and redcurrant, underscored with notes of cedar, mint and gentle spice. There is also a gentle mineral note and firm, but approachable tannins. This is perfectly drinkable now but would benefit from some time to open up so give it maybe 45-60 minutes in a decanter first to enjoy it at its best. This is a great way to enjoy classic Pauillac without it costing an arm and a leg!
The video below is from my vist to the Chateau in the spring of 2026. On the horizon, just to the right of a group of trees, the top of the tower of Chateau Latour is just visible.
