Unmistakably Cabernet Franc but with more weight than you’d usually find because the grapes for this are grown so far south. It’s a variety you tend not to see outside its spiritual homes of the Loire Valley and Bordeaux but this example is beautifully different to those being full of bramble fruit and wonderful depth. The grapes for this are grown organically near Nimes on limestone soil which lends a gentle minerality to all that dark fruit.
As a fan of Cabernet Franc this wine was something of a revelation when I first tasted it several years ago. I love the freshness of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc which often exhibits a slightly stalky character which works well with ripe fruit (less well in years when obtaining full ripeness is more of a challenge) but in the Loire the variety creates elegant reds rather than weight. Here, much further south where there's more warmth, ripeness is less of a struggle and the grapes develop more depth of flavour and a gently "wild" character which is equally attractive. This would be perfect with something like a slow braised lamb shank.
