Barbera is an interesting grape variety. It pops up in odd places all over the world but its spiritual home is in northern Italy, and that's where we're focusing here. It produces reds that vary in style from juicy, light and bouncy through to those with more body and structure and these three wines represent three different styles. This trio contains one bottle each of the following:
Barbera Araldica 2024, Piemonte, Italy 13.0% - A fresh, unoaked version with aromas of plum and raspberry and a wonderfully fresh palate with notes of cherry. In warmer weather you could even serve this slightly cool. Fabulously fresh and juicy.
Barbera d'Asti Superiore 2022, Tenute Il Cascinone, Crocera, Piemonte, Italy 14.5% - A fuller and rounder version made from older vines which sees 12 months in French oak barriques giving the ripe fruit a slight hint of spice/smoke.
Barbera Passito 2021, Fazzoletto, Piemonte, Italy 14.5% - Oooh. A Passito! This Barbera is made using a proportion of the grapes (about 20%) which have been left on the vine to get super ripe. These extra ripe grapes are then blended in with fresh Barbera grapes and fermented together. A riper, more muscular red with deeper fruit which has the effect of softening Barbera's natural acidity.
