2021 Percheron Shiraz/Mourvedre, Western Cape 13.5%

This is a Shiraz/Mourvedre blend with a dash of Viognier to leaven its density and add complexity in the tradition of the southern Rhône, here employed in South Africa.  The Shiraz and Viognier are co-fermented and quietly allowed to do their thing while waiting for the later ripening Mourvedre to be ready to complete the threesome.  The balance of 70% Shiraz, 27% Mourvedre and 3% Viognier is lovely, giving us a dark, generous red without being over the top.  It works well with savoury red meat dishes - give it a go with a Lancashire hotpot or a steak-and-kidney pie.

This has warming, dark berry aromas like blackberries and black cherries, a fresh, full palate with a touch of spice and a note of autumnal richness.
