Ch. Caronne Ste. Gemme sits at the northern end of the Central Medoc (the bit to the north of Margaux) and just outside the southern border of St. Julien. Its near neighbours are Château Gruaud Larose and Château Lagrange the prices of which will be significantly higher. Good value, therefore, tends to be found on just the other side of where the borders of the more prestigious communes are drawn. Here indeed is such value, a magnum of excellent Claret for under £40.
The blend here is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot grown on a mix of classic Bordeaux gravel and iron-rich sandstone. Can be drunk now or kept for a few years more if desired.
