Grape Varieties: Sauvignon

All about Sauvignon Blanc WineSauvignon Blanc produces some of the most distinctive white wines in the world.  The aroma of Sauvignon is unmistakable with its green leafy notes and gooseberry fruit.  Sauvignon Blanc is sometimes accused of being something of a one trick pony in that, unlike Chardonnay for example, it has the same basic flavour wherever it is grown and whatever the winemaker does to it.Sauvignon Blanc has its spiritual home in France, particularly in Bordeaux and the Loire Valley.  The wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume are probably the most famous European names associated with Sauvignon Blanc.  Sauvignon Blanc is also widely grown in the Touraine region of the Loire.Sauvignon Blanc reaches a very high standard in New Zealand.  Initially this was pioneered by brands like the widely promoted Cloudy Bay but increasingly more and more producers in New Zealand make Sauvignon Blanc of such high standards that Cloudy Bay seems now to be just another face in a high quality Sauvignon Blanc crowd.Sauvignon Blanc is also widely planted in Australia, particularly in areas such as the Margaret River.  Australian Sauvignon Blanc tends to be fuller and more tropical in flavour than New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.  Chile is also a significant producer of Sauvignon Blanc wines though at perhaps a more commercial level than the top Sauvignon Blancs of France and New Zealand.  The Sauvignon Blancs of South Africa are also worth seeking out.
