After years of disappointment and scores of samples that if not actually poor were certainly dull, South Africa has started to bloom. The old guard is fading, the next generation is taking over and the wines are improving massively. We still have to choose carefully but standards are so much higher than they were, even five years ago. With the strength of the pound against the rand, some of the best value in the southern hemisphere comes from here. Cape Heights offer more than they cost, False Bay are clean, lively and crisply defined. The Circle of Life pair offers precision, biodynamic winemaking with obvious class and generous flavours.
