All about Shiraz / Syrah Wine

Take your pick really as to whether you prefer to call is Syrah or Shiraz.  This grape is mostly referred to as Syrah in Europe and the Old World with Shiraz being the name most commonly used in the New World.  The French home of Syrah (Shiraz) is undoubtedly the Rhone Valley where in the north is produces Hermitage, Crozes Hermitage and Cote Rotie and in the south is a major constituent in the blend of several grape varieties that make Chateauneuf-du-Pape and other similar red wines named after the local villages such as Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Rasteau..  Syrah (Shiraz) is also widely planted in Languedoc-Roussillon where it is frequently blended with other grape varieties but rarely gets a mention on the label!

Under the name Shiraz, Syrah is planted throughout much of the New World but reaches its peak in the warm climates of Australia such as the Barossa Valley where Shiraz is characterised by its rich colour, full fat texture and high alcoholic content and mouthfilling flavour.  Examples of Shiraz from South Africa are understandably a little more restrained and there are promising examples now emerging from South America.
